Flu vaccinations are changing this year. There will be a different type of vaccine provided to patients over age 65 and for those patients eligible for the vaccine under age 65. This change is based on latest scientific evidence of the new vaccine being much more effective for older patients. Due to this change the organisation of flu clinics and administering these vaccines opportunistically is a little more complex than in previous years.
It's also important for patients to get their vaccinations from the surgery rather than elsewhere, as we have ordered quantities for patient numbers registered with the surgery who are eligible for the vaccine. If we do not have an adequate uptake of the vaccination in the surgery this may cause us financial loss. We order our vaccines a year in advance so the quantities cannot be changed.
Thank you for your help this year with these changes.
CHILD NASAL FLU VACCINATION PROGRAMME IN GP SURGERIES
Children aged 2,3 & 4 (not in school) have been sent invitation letters for booking an appointment in the surgery for their nasal flu vaccine. The appointment will be with one of our nurses.School aged children from 4 years to 10 years will be offered a nasal flu vaccine in school. If the child misses the vaccination day the school will offer another day to catch up on the vaccine. These will not be given in the surgery for this age group due to the school's programme.
Children aged 11 to 17 years of age who are eligible (with long term health conditions) for a nasal flu vaccine can book an appointment with one of our nurses. To check eligibility for the nasal flu vaccine, information is available at www.nhs.uk.
